Spring is here and so begins the quest for the perfect tomato

What Pete Says

Spring is here and so begins the quest for the perfect tomato. With so many varieties of tomatoes, each with its own flavor, color and shape, you might wonder what variety of tomato you would enjoy eating. Well it is guaranteed that nothing is tastier than a tomato you have grown yourself, regardless of the variety.

If you have a small yard or only a balcony, growing cherry tomatoes in a container is the best option. These little gems pack big flavor in a small package and come in many varieties. Don’t have a lot of time for maintenance; try the Early Girl variety that has an abundant and early harvest. Heirloom tomatoes have a long harvest season and offer colorful beauty to your dishes along with a variety of fresh, juicy flavor. Plum tomatoes work best for canning and cooking. Their delicious flavor and dense texture creates the best spaghetti sauce, and tomato soup you have eaten.

April 1st and 2nd join Pete’s Hardware to kick off tomato season with our Tomato Mania event. Hundreds of tomato plants will have arrived. Learn how to prepare the soil, plant and maintain your plants so you can enjoy the delicious flavor of home grown tomatoes throughout summer.
